The preservation of historical records and cultural heritage is essential for maintaining the collective memory of a nation. Universities play a critical role in safeguarding documents, photographs, manuscripts, and other archival materials that reflect the intellectual, social, cultural heritage, and political development of society.

The University of Duhok (UoD), through its Central Library, proposes the establishment of a National Archive and Digital Heritage Unit dedicated to collecting, preserving, managing, and providing access to public documents, manuscripts and important historical records related to the Kurdish nation, the Kurdistan Region, and the institutional history of the University of Duhok ensuring the protection of Kurdish heritage and institutional memory, and supporting digital transformation and scientific research.

The Central Library appreciates the support of individuals, institutions, and organizations that contribute to enriching the library’s academic resources. Donations play an important role in strengthening educational and research opportunities for students and academic staff. You can donate through the link: (Donate Here!)

This initiative will serve as a central repository for both physical and digital archival materials, ensuring that valuable historical information is preserved for future generations while remaining accessible to researchers, students, and the public through an advanced online archival information system.

The proposed archive unit will also contribute to documenting key historical events and preserving the cultural identity of the Kurdish people. By partnering with the Oriental Institute at Leipzig University, the project will integrate international expertise and local knowledge, establishing a foundation for sustainable, modern archival practices. This initiative aims to safeguard the past while empowering future generations through the preservation and accessibility of important historical, cultural, and administrative records.
